WICHITA – Forecasters expect more severe weather to impact the state today, as conditions remain ripe for violent weather. According to the National Weather Service Wichita office, the latest round of severe weather is expected to start in the late morning hours.

“Severe storms are possible again this afternoon and evening, mainly along and south of an Emporia to Wichita to Anthony line.” the Weather Service said on Friday morning. “The main hazards will be large hail up to golf-ball size and damaging winds to 70 mph.”

There was certainly a tornado outbreak yesterday, but the violent weather bypassed the Wichita metro and Butler County as a whole.  According to the National Weather Service, fifteen tornadoes touched down in Oklahoma and Kansas on Thursday. Nine of those confirmed twisters were in the Sunflower state.

Several tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in Barton County, while trackers chased a rain wrapped tornado just west of Salina near the city’s airport. To our south and west, large tornadoes were spotted near the northern Oklahoma communities of Waynoka and Alva, in addition to several that touched down in the western half of the Sooner state.

In the Wichita metropolitan area, Sedgwick County was placed under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a short time on Thursday evening, as many in the area viewed quite a lightning show.
