EL DORADO — This weekend is a busy one in El Dorado. Between the Dam Music Fest and the Butler County Fair there isn’t an empty hotel room in town. Also happening this Saturday is a chance for two area football players to pad up and take to the football field.
Cooper Dreifort of Andover and Dallin Marlnee of Augusta are both representing their schools in the annual Shrine Bowl. Kickoff for the game is at 7 p.m. at BG Products Veteran’s Stadium Saturday. Both will take their place on the West team coached by Marc Marinelli of Goddard Eisenhower.
Marlnee will be wearing #11 jersey as a tight end/middle linebacker. In 2016 he was named tot he all-senior team, first team All-League, first team All-State, first team All-Metro, first team All-League Most Valuable Player. he plans to continue his football career at Butler Community College.
Dreifort is also committed to play at Butler next season. The lineman received first team All-League honors in 2014.
They have a familiar face on the field in Morgan Sommers, the team’s athletic trainer.
The Shrine Bowl has been a Kansas tradition since 1974. Not only does it showcase the talent of local all-stars, but also is a fundraiser for the Shrine Hospital raising more than $2.5 million since its founding.
Players will stay in the Butler Community College dorms taking part in multiple events throughout the weekend.
The weekend kicks off with a golf tournament beginning at 8 a.m. Friday at Prairie Trails Golf Course, 1100 County Club Ln. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. A banquet will be held at 6 p.m. at El Dorado High School to celebrate the Shiners Hospital. The band will open the evening with a concert beginning at 5 p.m. at the high school.
Saturday’s events start bright and early beginning with a Walk for Love and Strong Legs Run. The walk begins at 7:30 a.m. and the run at 8 a.m. beginning at BG Stadium. At 10 a.m. there will be a parade through downtown El Dorado. A high school combine at 9 a.m. and a junior All-Star Challenge will take place at the stadium at 9 and 11 a.m. respectively.
