WICHITA – Wichita State men’s and women’s track and field teams welcome 48 newcomers to the program this fall, including 29 from the state of Kansas, five junior college transfers, and two from overseas.
“I’m really excited to get going with this fabulous group of newcomers,” Rainbolt said. “We have athletes from 12 different states and also from Spain. Anytime you can add close to 50 athletes to a program like ours it is a very exciting time.”
The 48 newcomers earned 33 state high school individual titles, and even more top three finishes at their respective state championships. The states of Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, New York, California, Virginia, and Nebraska are represented, as well as Spain.
“The significance of this recruiting class is even greater,” Rainbolt said. “Because we are going in to a new adventure and new conference, these young people will be significant in the next four to five years of leading our program and figure out what it’s all about to compete in The American.”
Cassidy Androff – Gardner, Kan. (Gardner Edgerton HS)…Androff finished second in the shot put and seventh in the discus throw at the 2017 KSHSAA State Championships. 2016 state runner-up in the shot put. Personal best – 42-1.5 in the shot put and 123-2 in the discus throw.
Celia Biel – Hutchinson, Kan. (Hutchinson Trinity HS)…Won the cross country state meet and won the 1,600m at the 2017 KSHSAA 3A State Championships. Placed third her junior season in the 1,600m at the state meet. Personal best – 2:28 in the 800m, 5:20 in the 1,600m, and 15:20 in the 4K.
Anycia Cole – Goshen, N.Y. (Goshen Central HS)…Cole finished second in the long jump and ninth in the 100m hurdles at the 2017 NYSPHSAA State Championships. Personal best – 18-7.25 in the long jump, 15:35 in the 100m hurdles, and 1:03.12 in the 400m hurdles.
Hannah Cole – Andover, Kan. (Andover Central HS)…Hannah placed sixth in the long jump at the 2015 and 2017 KSHSAA 4A State Championships. Personal best – 18-1 in the long jump and 12.9 in the 100m.
Jaden Damon – Goddard, Kan. (Eisenhower HS)…Finished second place in the long jump and triple jump at the 2016 and 2017 KSHSAA 5A State Championships. Personal best – 18-5.5 in the long jump and 37-10.5 in the triple jump.
Jewel Eck – Andale, Kan. (Andale HS)…Appeared at the KSHSAA 4A State Championships in all four years of her high school career. Was champion in 2016, second in 2014, third in 2015, and fourth in 2017. Personal best – 12-9 in the pole vault and 16-8.75 in the long jump.
Mia Hays – Andover, Kan. (Wichita West HS)…Finished third in the triple jump at the 2014 KSHSAA 5A State Championships and sixth in 2015. Personal best – 5-0 high jump, 16-7 long jump, 36-10.5 triple jump, 109-0 in the javelin throw.
Gabby Hopkins – Mill Valley, Kan. (Mill Valley HS)…Hopkins finished second in the shot put and eighth in the discus throw at the 2016 KSHSAA 5A State Championships. In her senior season she placed second in the shot put. Personal best – 45-2 in the shot put and 126-2 in the discus throw.
Kourtni Hubert – Beloit, Kan. (Beloit HS)…Was a four time KSHSAA 3A State Champion in the javelin throw and finished second in the shot put her senior season. Personal best – 42-0 in the shot put and 147-10 in the javelin throw.
Nerea Makoly – Madrid, Spain (Colegio San Gabriel)…School champion in long jump, third in the 100m hurdles, and champion of Spain 100m hurdles. Personal best – 7.77 in the 60m, 25.06 in the 200m, 14.34 in the 100m hurdles, 18-10 in the long jump.
Natalie McClure – Santa Barbara, Calif. (San Marcos HS)…Finished 17th in the 3,200m at the CIF-SS Division 2. Personal best – 5:09 1,600m, 11:00 3,200m, 17:40 in the 3 mile.
Taniyah McMillian – Oklahoma City, Okla. (Millwood HS)…Was a five time OSSAA 2A State Champion, including four time champion in the 200m and 2015 100m champion.
Mia Moret – Fort Collins, Colo. (Poudre HS)…Moret finished sixth in pole vault at the 2017 CHSAA 5A State Championships. Personal best – 12-0 in the pole vault.
Jalen Milligan – Chandler, Okla. (Chandler HS)… Placed third in the long jump and sixth in the 100m hurdles at the 2016 OSSAA 3A State Championships. In 2017 she finished second in the long jump, seventh in the 100m hurdles, and seventh in the shot put. Personal best – 12.5 100m, 15.9 100m hurdles, 17-9 long jump, 35-5 shot put.
Amber Reed – Shawnee Mission, Kan. (Shawnee Mission North HS)…Reed finished fourth in the 1,600m and sixth in the 3,200m her senior year and seventh in the 1,600m her junior year at the KSHSAA 6A State Championships. Personal best – 5:05 1,600m, 11:02 3,200m, 18:11 in the 5K.
Gabriela Reyna – Wichita, Kan. (North HS)…Finished third in the state cross country meet her junior season and seventh in the 1,600m her senior season at the KSHSAA 6A State Championships. Personal best – 11:11 in the 3,200m, 7:33 in the 2k, 14:58 in the 4k, and 18:37 in the 5K.
Maria Romero – Madrid, Spain (IES Leon Felipe)…Won the 2016 Spanish Championship in the 60m hurdles and third in 100m hurdles, in 2015 placed second in the 60m hurdles. Personal best – 8.83 in the 60m hurdles, 14.49 in the 100m hurdles, 16-9 in the long jump, 3,134 points in the pentathlon.
Rita Schnacker – Kearney, Neb. (Kearney HS)…Finished third at the 2016 NSAA Class A state cross country meet and 12th in 2015. Placed eighth in the 3,200m at the 2017 NSAA Class A state track and field meet. Personal best – 2:20 800m, 5:13 1,600m, 11:16 3,200m, 18:37 in the 5K.
Camryn Slatten – Liberal, Kan. (Liberal HS)…Slatten placed third in the 3,200m and eighth in the 1,600m at the 2017 KSHSAA 5A State Championships. Personal best – 5:24 in the 1,600m, 11:32 in the 3,200m, 15:32 in the 4K.
Morgan Walther – Andale, Kan. (Andale HS)…Competed at the KSHSAA 4A state track meet three times in the high jump, including a second place finish her junior season and third place finish her sophomore year. Personal best – 5-4 in the high jump.
Alexi Whatley – Orting, Wash. (St. Martin University)…Finished fourth in the 400m hurdles at the 2017 GNAC championships. Personal best – 15.94 in the 100m hurdles and 1:02.32 in the 400m hurdles.
Alyssa Wheeler – Wichita, Kan. (Kapaun Mt Carmel HS)…Wheeler finished second in pole vault at the 2016 and 2017 KSHSAA 5A state championships. Personal best – 11-10 in the pole vault.
Skaila White – Cleburne, Texas (Cleburne HS)…Won both the long jump and triple jump at the UIL 5A District 9 championships. Personal best – 18-6 in the long jump and 39-8.25 in the triple jump.
Yazmine Wright – Hutchinson, Kan. (Hutchinson HS)…Wright won the 400m at the KSHSAA 6A state championship her junior season and finished second her sophomore and senior seasons. Placed third in the 800m at the state meet her senior year. Personal best – 55.51 in the 400m and 2:19.16 in the 800m.
