GODDARD – The two arch rivals had to drive thirty minutes to play each other, but Andover and Andover Central were happy to lock horn on the floor of Goddard High School on Tuesday night. The Lady Jaguars ended up getting the 2-1 win after a match where momentum went from one extreme to the other.
Andover Central got out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but the Lady Trojans quickly tied on a pair of kills from senior Isabelle Reynolds. Both teams would trade points and lock up with a 4-4 tie before Andover scored three unanswered points to take an 8-5 lead after a kill from junior Sydney Wekamp. As the game went on, Reynolds pushed three more kills to take the Lady Trojans to a 14-9 lead before Lady Jaguar Coach Rachel Tyner called her first timeout of the match.
Out of the break, the Lady Jaguars saw a sudden burst of energy from junior Jacquee Jessop who contributed three immediate kills to bring Andover Central within three. Andover would score three unanswered points to lead 20-14 at the next timeout. The Lady Trojans would hold Andover Central to only two more points for a 25-16 final score in the first set.
In the second set of the match, Andover Central jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Lady Trojans would score a point. Isabelle Reynolds had an emphatic kill to make it 6-2, but the Lady Jaguars continued to pull away to a 10-5 lead. Jessop poured salt in the Trojan’s wounds by getting two back to back kills that gave Central a seven-point lead before Andover would score another point, just prior to Lady Trojan Coach Andrea Daugherty’s first timeout of the match.
Daugherty’s words during the timeout must have worked, as the Lady Trojans pushed within three at one point, falling behind 21-18. Two Central mistakes and another kill from Isabelle Reynolds made it a 23-22 score, however, the Lady Jaguars tacked on two extra points to win the second set 23-25.
In the third and final set, Andover Central took off and never looked back, leading 11-2 at one point in the set. Andover would get as close as a seven-point deficit, trailing 14-7, but the Lady Jaguars held them to just six more points on the night, winning the third set with a 25-13 final score, and winning the match 2-1.
In other action, Andover lost in the first match of the night to Goddard 2-0 (25-27, 23-25).
Andover will return to Goddard this weekend for tournament play, while Andover Central will have the weekend off.
