“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the loss of Keaton Chicoine from the class of 2020,” Christian A. Bork, the principal of Bishop Heelan School, said in a statement released Friday, confirming the death of 19-year old Keaton.
“Keaton was a beloved member of the Crusader family and our prayers are extended to his family and friends. We will honor him at tomorrow’s commencement ceremony,” Bork continued.
The Florid Highway Patrol has informed that Chicoine was riding a sedan, driven by a 16-year old St. Petersburg boy, on Thursday afternoon.
They were traveling North on the Frankland Howard Bridge towards Tampa. The 3-mile long bridge connects Tampa and St. Petersburg while crossing Tampa Bay in between.
According to the Highway Patrol, the sedan came across some mechanical issues and stopped along the shoulder to inspect the vehicle.
A pick-up truck with a trailer was traveling Northbound at the same time on the bridge. It took a drift all of a sudden and collided with the Sioux City teen who was standing along the fog line.
Authorities reported that Chicoine sustained fatal injuries at the spot, but the truck fled the scene immediately.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers later caught up with the truck driver and took him into custody. Later he was delivered to the Hillsborough County Jail.
They have identified the convict as Rosanio Rafael Bartolon-Morales (33). He is facing charges of leaving the scene with a fatal crash and driving without a license resulting in death.
The identity of the St. Petersburg teen has not been released.
