A woman from Athens has been convicted of killing her 4-year-old daughter in 2016.
As reported through the court documents, Stephanie Diane Smith is sentenced to life imprisonment to suffocate her 4-year-old daughter to death. Initially being charged with capital murder, she was later pleaded guilty to hooliganism. Smith had been in the Limestone County since April 2017, after she got arrested by confessing of murder.
Athens police report that the officials received a 911 call on July 4, 2016, by a woman named Stephanie Smith who claimed that her daughter has stopped breathing. The policemen rushed to help her and found Smith giving CPR on a little girl when the police arrived.
4-year-old was sent to Athens-Limestone Hospital and later Huntsville Hospital, where the minor was declared dead after three days. At that time, Smith informed that she found her daughter lying between the bed and the wall and not breathing.
After nine months, on April 13, 2017, Smith herself went to the police department and confessed suffocating her daughter to death. She labeled her mental illness the reason behind the girl’s murder.
As stated, Smith had a history of mental illness, and she had stopped taking her pills for quite some time, this resulted in her ‘devil’ behavior which led to the death of a 4-year-old girl. A private autopsy did not determine the cause of death.
After four years, Smith is now finally pleaded guilty to the heinous crime she committed.
