Cuomo Wants Every Baseball Game At New York

On July 28th, 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo welcomed many Major League Baseball teams to play the rest of their season in New York. He further claimed that the state will provide better protection to the players from COVID-19. The pandemic primarily has led to the postponement of this season.

Due to Miami Marlins staff and players testing positive for coronavirus, on Monday, Major League Baseball has delayed two games which include the Yankees vs Phillies in Philadelphia. The Marlins played against Phillies last week.

MLB stated that Marlins will self-quarantine and they plan on conducting “additional COVID-19 testing.”

Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, Dr. Ashish Jha criticized MLB’s intentions of returning and continuing the rest of the season. He suggested delaying the season so a fast-paced contact tracing can take place.

Cuomo said Tuesday that a successful MLB season “would be good for the nation’s soul.”

Cuomo claimed that since New York state has “one of the lowest infection rates in the United States” they are eligible for conducting any Major League Baseball games furthering that stadiums are open for such games.

In a conference call, Cuomo revealed that 534 new cases of coronavirus were reported on Monday and that less than 1% tested positive for the virus.

One of the epicenters of the virus, New York has managed to curb the outbreak while other states are experiencing a stark surge.

“If you’re having problems playing in other states, come play here,” Cuomo declared. “We have the ability to do it. We have the testing resources to do it.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, White House coronavirus advisor and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases expressed his concern for the spread of infection among the Marlins.

The New York Governor gave a vague description for conducting games. He said that teams can come to New York through private planes and the staff can stay in “quarantine hotels.” 14 days prior to the game, they have to stay isolated and then tested before the game. Only those who test negative will proceed to be physically part of the game.

Cuomo stated that this move will assist in making the struggling economy prosper again.

Without the initiatives from the Federal government in devising better programs for states, cities, and towns, the local governments might have to cut down on services and increase the fares on public services like the subway fares.
