Discover Your Inner Handyman With This Short Repair Guide

All your small appliances and other related devices are powered by electricity. Their most important parts are a hot (black) and a neutral (white) wire through which the current flows.

The current’s movement through these wires is called voltage, and in many households, the hot wire has 120 volts while the neutral one has zero. So there is a difference in voltage between these two wire types, and its role is to move the electric current and power your appliances.

How would it be if you could repair your motor appliances and replace certain parts of them?

Types of Appliances

1.   Appliances used for heating

These appliances heat different liquids and food, such as a toaster or a coffee maker.

2.   Appliances used for moving

Your food processor and vacuum cleaner are types of appliances that move something.

3.   Appliances used for heating and moving

This category contains more complex appliances that are more complex than the previous one, one relevant example being a hairdryer.

Basic Information About Motor Appliances

Your motor appliances are designed to serve one specific purpose: converting electrical energy into movement. So you can use them anytime to blend foods, pick up dirt, open different types of cans, and move air.

Their essential component is a motor that transforms electrical energy into magnetic energy to rotate a shaft. At its end, the shaft will contain different attachments such as blades, which will use the electrical energy and transform it into movement.

There are various motor appliances such as food blenders and mixers, garbage disposers, electric can openers, and different types of vacuum cleaners. Other appliances include electric knives, juicers, knife sharpeners, coffee grinders, electric clocks, ice cream makers, and shavers (the foil and rotary head categories).

Because they use 120-volt electricity, your motor appliances and the other ones too are prone to encounter the same problems. If you wish to learn about the causes of these issues, they are usually a circuit breaker or a fuse, loose or grounded wires, or plugs and switches.

How to Solve Problems With Small Appliances

●    Appliance Cords and Wires

When testing appliance cords or wires, you must be sure they are disconnected from the electrical source or capacitor. Then, verify if that cord or wire can conduct electricity properly using a multimeter or a continuity tester.

Once you have attached the tester, move the wire several times to ensure there aren’t any broken parts in the strands that may cause intermittent shorts. Then, perform a second check of the flexibility and quality of the wire insulation or cord.

There is a chance you may find breaks or strands that will expose the strands, in which case you should replace that damaged cord or wire. Make sure the new one has the same gauge and rating.

●    Controls for Small Appliances

The appliance controls will regulate the electrical power coming into a small appliance according to three factors: time, temperature, and function. If you wish to know what devices enter the small appliance category, they are the following: thermostats, switches, rheostats, and also timing mechanisms.

Many appliance problems have one main cause: the controller. Use a continuity tester to determine if this component is functioning properly. You will have to place the clip on the input side, the tester probe on the output side, and activate the controller. This activity will show you if your controller is functioning properly.

If your small appliance contains a variable controller, you will have to use a different approach. So, instead of using a continuity tester, you have to choose a different measuring device, namely a multimeter. It would show you if any changes occurred in resistance.
