The president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, Gerard Fitzgerald commented that the New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio is threatening first responder’s jobs and using them as political pawns over federal funding for New York City at a time when their “heroism is on display every single day.” 

Wednesday morning, the 6th of May 2020 on CNN’s New Day, de Blasio said that New York City’s economy had already lost $7.4 billion amidst this ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Without a fourth federal stimulus, he’s looking at furloughs and layoffs of first responders.

The Mayor said “the heroes in this crisis” i.e. first responders, healthcare workers and educators  are facing furloughs in cities and states all over the US because of the current economic strain of the pandemic; at a time when they should be celebrated. Fitzgerald said that Fire Department of New York members worked every day for long hours, watched others fight for their lives during these times of despair, all while worrying if they brought the virus home to infect their families.

“And less than one month after we were receiving record high call volumes, the likes of which we haven’t seen since September 11, our mayor, whose chief duty is to protect the people of the city, suggests that our jobs are dispensable,” Fitzgerald added.

Fitzgerald also commented that Washington needs to overcome politics and band together to get the funding to cities and states that need it. In such desperate times, first responders; those helping protect the city should at the very least not be punished for their selfless acts.
