But if you don’t want to drain yourself into restoring the old wooden furniture, then you can simply get bed for rent in Bangalore, or a dining table, or sofa without even investing a lot in it.
If you too are thinking of giving your old furniture a new look, refer to the steps mentioned below.
- Clean the Piece
The basic step in maintaining any kind of furniture is keeping it clean. Especially, if they are kept outside, exposed to dirt, dust, and sunlight, you must clean them frequently. It’s even better if you can protect it with a clean piece of cover.
For cleaning, you can take a scrubber and gently scrub its surface. You can also use a paintbrush for this purpose. Once you are done with scrubbing, clean the surface of the furniture with running water and dry it with a towel.
- Inspect the current state of the furniture
Once the furniture is cleaned, you can now check whether there are scratches, stains, etc. on its surface. Look for other deformities like cracks, chips, dents, etc. Inspect the overall piece and determine what has to be done according to the type of damage.
- Remove Old Finish
If you haven’t removed its original finish for years now, consider doing it now. You must be wondering how to strip off the old wood finish. You can either sand it off or use a chemical stripper. Both the process have been explained in details below:
For sanding the wooden furniture, use a sand block and rub the surface of the furniture till its surface becomes smooth. After some time use medium grit sandpaper and continue running it until the outer finish is completely removed.
If you are using a chemical stripper, take any semi paste product or liquid one that may or may not contain methylene chloride. Now, spread the mixture over the surface of the furniture using a bristle brush. Allow the stripper to sit for some time. Peel it off with a scrapper. Apply a second coat of the stripper and repeat the process unless you have scraped the finish entirely.
- Apply a layer of sealant
After the surface finish has been stripped off, it’s time to apply a layer of coating. If you have used the chemical stripper for the above-mentioned process, you need to sand the surface using 120 grit paper before applying sealant. The sealant would protect the wood, retaining its good quality and creating a base for any paint, allowing it to spread evenly. Apply a thick layer of sealant and allow it to soak into the wood. Once it’s dry, sand down the surface again using 120 grit sandpaper.
- Paint the wood
After you have applied sealant, paint the wooden surface. Before you choose what paint or stain you would apply, you can go through a wide variety of paints available in the market. Some are oil-based, some are water-based or gel stains. Nowadays, even two-in-one stain products are also available.
- Apply the last coat of finish
This is the last step of refinishing a wooden piece of furniture. Just like you get to choose stains or paints from a variety of choices, you too get a variety of finishes in the market. You must choose a finish based on your choice and the look you want to give to your furniture.
Once all the above-mentioned processes are done, you will get a new piece of furniture. Warm furniture pieces not only enhance the look of your house but also render a welcoming ambiance.
