Among the other questions left unanswered in the Season 1 final of The Umbrella Academy is what happened to Ben (aka Number Six), who died suddenly at some stage in Hargreeves’ youth. It’s something the comics series focused on haven’t explained yet, even though there are a few cryptic references.
Of example, in the comics, Allison claims that Luther is responsible for Ben’s suicide, claiming that he and their adoptive father, Sir Reginald Hargreeves, pushed Ben too hard. Yet he could not have been the only one to blame.
“I think [all the Hargeeves] may be complicit in his murder,” Gerard Way, who founded the Umbrella Academy comics, told IGN in 2019.
It might clarify why neither of the brothers can talk about Ben’s passing.
In any case, we ‘re not going to get a straightforward answer anytime soon. “It’s above the surprise that it has got to do with the story too because that not shown in the book,” Way went on, as Steve Blackman said, “I don’t know what happened to Ben!”
As Ben returns to Klaus, he has no discernible scars or marks, like all of the other ghostly characters Klaus may see, but his powers may have played a part in his passing. As has been seen intermittently in the Netflix series,
Ben can summon and manipulate eldritch monsters who use his body as a gateway, enabling him to unleash their terrors on his enemies. It’s a dangerous ability to have, because whether it’s exercised wrongly or too much, it’s easy to see how something might get caught on fire.
Several fans have claimed that Ben died by suicide, because the inscription in his memorial stone reads, “Let the darkness inside you find comfort in the sun.”
