Police in Boston: Officers have been surrounded by ‘hostile crowds’ while arresting

BOSTON (CBS) — Boston commissioner William Gross says he’s alarmed by an alleged incident involving officers and a “hostile crowd” Tuesday evening. The department said during a statement that officers were “surrounded and assaulted” by the gang.

It happened at about 5:40 p.m. in Roxbury within the area of Humboldt Avenue and Crawford Street.

Police said officers were responding to a involve an individual carrying a butt pack containing a gun and stopped a person carrying a butt pack.

The statement from police said that because there was a “large crowd” within the area, officers tried to urge control of the suspect’s hands. The defendant supposedly then “grabbed the officer’s wrist and started clutching it.”

Police said the suspect continued to resist arrest and caused a police body camera to knocked off a politician. the gang grew, and someone opened a fireplace hydrant, “causing an important flow of water pressure onto the road directed at the officers,” consistent with the statement.

Someone also threw buckets of water at officers while they tried to place the suspect into a cruiser, police said.

“I’m alarmed by the extent of hostility my officers had to face while arresting a felon armed with an illegal firearm. They attacked by members of the same community they were attempting to guard by affecting this arrest,” Gross said during a statement.

Public safety may be a shared responsibility we’d like to still work together, not con towards each other, to realize that goal.”

Police seized a weighted revolver and assaulted 44-year-old Jermaine Thomas, of Mattapan, with illegal ownership of a pistol, unlawful ownership of ammo and attack.
