Sairat is an Indian Marathi-language romantic tragedy film directed by Nagraj Manjule and produced by Manjule under the Aatpat production banner, Nittin Keni and Nikhil Sane under the direction of Essel Vision Productions, and Zee Studios. It tells the story of two students from different castes who fall in love and cause a slight havoc between their families. Sairat is one of the most successful Marathi films. There was an increase of 110 crore rupees.
Manjule framed the story in 2009, based on his own experience with caste discrimination, but abandoned it when he realised that it was bothering him. He returned to the story after finishing Fandry (2013), and he finished the script the following year. Manjule wrote the screenplays, and his brother, Bharat, wrote the dialogues. The film was shot in the village of Jeur in the Solapur district of Manjule’s Karmala Taluka. The director of photography was Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti, and the film was edited by Kutub Inamdar. Sairat received a standing ovation at the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. It was released on April 29, 2016, and has received both positive and negative reviews in Maharashtra and several other Indian states. The film was a commercial success, and it went on to become the most important Marathi film of all time. At the 63rd National Film Awards, Rajguru received the National Film Award – Special Mention. At the 2017 Filmfare Marathi Awards, Sairat won 11 awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Manjule, and Best Music Album. Rajguru and Thosar were named the best debut men and women.
Nagraj Manjule’s first film, ‘Fandry,’ was released in 2014 and quickly became a major hit on the international film circuit. His next film, as expected, was speculative. The director has taken his time, and the result is ‘Sairat,’ a film was worth the two-year wait. Unlike ‘Fandry,’ ‘Sairat’ does not only go into great detail about caste discrimination but alsot, there is a discriminatory angle between two young people from different socioeconomic sectors. There are more wounded pride and egos involved in the creation of ‘Sairat.’ The distinction here is.
Love stories are frequently based on opposition from the lovers’ families. The shops Parshya (Akash) and Archi (Rinku) do the same thing. The film, on the other hand, isn’t about mushy conversations and flashy music. It’s a story about innocence, revolt, and a never-before-told attitude. The son of a fisherman is captivated by Archi and seizes every opportunity to catch a glimpse of her. Archi develops feelings for him as they begin to interact. Unfortunately, Archi’s father discovers the couple’s brewing romance, and everything is turned upside down. Parshya and Archi struggle with the odds of being together, but will their love triumph over Archi’s father’s strong opposition? More importantly, will it stand the test of time?
‘Sairat’ is a master entertainer as well as a good film. Ajay Atul’s music, camera work, and graph only add to the quality. With a running time of nearly three hours, it may appear to be a tedious watch. The film could have been a little sharper, but its subject is well understood. The spectator is not bored because something or other is happening all the time.
Another strength of the film is its reliance on well-known actors. Despite the fact that Akash and Rinku are newcomers, their performances are on par with those of veteran actors. One of the main reasons why the film succeeds is because Parshya and Archi are well-known to the general public. And he does it very well. Tanaji provides comic relief. Nagraj Manjule’s appearance is unforgettable.

AjayAtul, who collaborated with Manjule in Fandry in 2015, wrote the Sairat song and background score. Western classical music was recorded as an Indian first at the Sony Scoring Stage in Hollywood, California. Ajay Gogavale, Shreya Ghoshal, and Chinmayi appeared on a four-song album written by Ajay-Atul and Manjule. It was released on the Zee Music Company Label on April 1, 2016. The orchestra featured a 45-piece string section, a 6-piece wooden wind section, a 13-piece brass section, a 6-piece horn section, and harps. The 66-piece orchestra was led by Mark Graham.
Manjule describes the lyrics as “rustic” and spoken in “rural lingo.” He claims that the language and songs in the film set it apart from other films in which characters mysteriously transform into poets. The music in the film was described as “rare” and “addictive” by Mihir Bhanage of The Times of India, who added, “It makes you fall in love with the songs from the word go.”. The score is “audacious,” according to The Indian Express’ Lalitha Suhasini, and “makes you laugh, cry, and want to fall in love.”
The famous four songs of the movie were :
- YAAD LAGALA
- AATACH BAYA KA BAVARLA
- SAIRAT ZALA JI
Lyrics of all the 4 songs were done by the famous duo of Ajay-Atul and singers were Shreya Ghoshal, Ajay Gogavle and Chinmay Sripada.
