There are many Bollywood movies which are depicting the life of bandits. But the reality of bandits is far away from what we see in Bollywood. If someone wants to know the reality they should see the life of these people in Chambal, there is no such thing like coming on horse backs and carrying loads of jewels and gems which they acquire from the natives. Many films in Bollywood have been successful in suggesting the image of bandits in such a way that it completely distorts reality. Thanks to the films such as ‘Bandit Queen’ and ‘Pan Singh Tomar’ directed by Shekhar Kapur and Tigmanshu Dhulia respectively, which helped in breakdown of the already existing wrong image of the lives of bandits. ‘Sonchiriya’ is also one of these creations.
ABOUT THE MOVIE ‘SONCHIRIYA’
Sonchiriya is one of the kinds of movies which will chase you even in your dreams. The story of the film is so dark and intense that it will give you the ground reality of the bandits of Chambal. You might have heard about the gangs of Chambal in the newspapers and on news channels but have you ever wondered how these people are? And, what is the reason for them to do such things? About 40-50 years back there was a lot of fear in the minds of people about these gangs as these gangs didn’t even fear the law and its caretakers. For the people these dacoits were the kings of the world and they believed that only dacoits could rule their lives. Before we move onto the story of Sonchiriya, I think you must know some terminologies in the world of these bandits.
The first one is ‘Baaghi’… a baaghi (translates to Rebel) is someone who leaves all the comforts and satisfactions of his life and takes the path of revenge and the reason for this revenge could be anything. Something very wrong has happened in their lives that their main motive is just vengeance.
The second one is ‘Beehad’… a beehad which translates to ‘Moor’ in English is the area which is high in land and mainly is covered by grass and heather. The bandits used to live in these areas and it is said that even if a police officer entered in these areas, they used to get killed by the gangs residing in the moors.
The third term is ‘Mukhbari’… the word for this term in English is ‘Delation’. These dacoits usually loot the villages near them. They enter these villages such that some of the people of the village are in support of them and give them shelter to stay but sometimes these supporters are the one who become the informants of police to get them captured. This treachery is known as Mukhbari.
The last term is ‘Surrender’… although almost all those who are reading this know the meaning of surrender but, for dacoits the meaning of surrender is to become a government servant and if someone surrenders the government used to give them rewards as well.
Now that you are quite familiar with these terms, let’s move forward with the storyline of the movie which you are about to see.
STORYLINE OF ‘SONCHIRIYA’
The movie starts with the moors of Chambal in 1975. The gang which was considered highly dangerous was the gang of dacoit Maan Singh. Maan Singh has two men in his gang which are considered to be his left and right hands, their names are Vakil Singh and Lakhan Singh. As the movie continues, we see that Maan Singh gets the news of a marriage being held in the nearby village and there is a lot of jewelry which is being given in dowry. Maan’s gang reaches there with the motive of loot but one of his gang members informs the police about this and they are now encircled by the police team from everywhere. The police force is led by the new Daroga (Inspector) of Chambal who is Virendra Singh Gujjar. Now, Gujjar is not someone who is new to Maan Singh, in fact they have some personal grudges which will be revealed in the movie later. The inspector kills Maan Singh along with 15-20 members of his gang but somehow Vakil and Lakhan escape from this situation. Maan Singh’s dead body is loaded on a truck and that truck is being driven around in the village by Inspector Gujjar himself so as to give the message that there is no need to fear these Dacoits anymore.
Vakil Singh is now the new leader of the gang and he wants to avenge the death of Maan Singh so he decides to kill that gang member who became the police informant and he also wants to take revenge from Daroga Virendra Gujjar. On the other hand, Lakhan is thinking of something else; he wants his whole gang to surrender. Meanwhile, a woman named Indumati arrives at the gang’s residing area with a young girl who has been raped and she needs to get this girl to hospital as soon as possible. Indumati asks Vakil Singh for his help and tells him that she also belongs to the same caste as him. Now, it is very evident that for these gang members caste is a very important factor. Vakil Singh agrees to help her and they take the young girl to hospital but later it is revealed that Indumati is on a run, but the question is what was she running from? How is the title of this film related to the movie? Will Vakil and Lakhan surrender? What was Maan and Gujjar’s personal grudge?
Well, I will refrain myself from giving any more spoilers and suggest you watch this movie because I’m sure this movie will stay with you forever!
