Per the New York Times, Stephen Sondheim, the magnificent and erudite composer and lyricist who transformed American musical theatre with works such as Company, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park With George, and Into the Woods, has passed.

He was 91 years old. Sondheim, who Oscar Hammerstein II taught and Leonard Bernstein on his way to nine Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, an Oscar, and eight Grammy Awards over his illustrious career, died early Friday (Nov. 26) at his residence in Roxbury, Conn., according to his attorney and colleague, F. Richard Pappas, as quoted by the New York Times. Sondheim’s representative could not be reached for comment right away.

Sondheim wrote lyrics to Bernstein’s music for the first West Side Story production in the late 1950s, then partnered with Jule Styne on Gypsy (“Everything’s Coming Up Roses”). The West Side Story film soundtrack, featuring lyrics by Sondheim, spent 54 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 albums list.

It’s the most weeks at the top of the 65-year-old chart since it started posting every week in March 1956. “Send in the Clowns,” his solemn plaintiff cry from A Little Night Music, the 1973 drama influenced by Ingmar Bergman’s Smiles on a Summer Night, has been sung by prominent vocalists like Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, and Barbra Streisand.

He surely was a legend who has been famous for so many of his notable works and is counted as one of the most talented people. We are surely going to miss him and his creative work for the industry.
