The Conjuring 2 (also known as The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Case in the United Kingdom and Ireland) is a supernatural horror film directed by James Wan that was released in 2016. Chad Hayes, Carey W. Hayes, Wan, and David Leslie Johnson wrote the screenplay.
It’s the follow-up to 2013’s The Conjuring, the second in the Conjuring sequence, and the third in the Conjuring Universe franchise. From the first film, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their roles as paranormal investigators and authors Ed and Lorraine Warren.
The Warrens move to the United Kingdom in 1977 to help the Hodgson family, who are witnessing poltergeist activity at their Enfield council house, which later became known as the Enfield poltergeist.
Plot
Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate the Amityville murders at the Amityville house in 1976, attempting to decide whether a supernatural spirit was actually responsible for Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdering his entire family on November 13, 1974, and the subsequent haunting incident involving the Lutz family.
Lorraine is drawn into a vision during a seance in which she relives the murders. She is drawn to the basement by the ghost of one of the murdered children, where she meets a demonic nun figure and sees Ed being impaled, terrifying her.
After Janet, the second-oldest of four daughters, plays with a ouija board she built with her friend Camilla, the Hodgson family starts to encounter unusual phenomena in their home in the London suburb of Enfield in 1977.
Janet begins to sleepwalk and has hallucinations in which she converses with an entity in the form of an enraged elderly man who sits in the family’s armchair and claims ownership of the property.
All of the Hodgson brothers, as well as their mother Peggy, are eventually witnesses to paranormal phenomena, which scares them into finding shelter with their neighbours. Janet is possessed by the elderly man Bill Wilkins, who previously lived and died in the building, as the media tries to interview the family.
Wilkins says he loves tormenting the family and wants to regain his home during the possession. When Janet exhibits further symptoms of demonic possession, the storey reaches the Warrens, who are asked to help in an investigation to determine if Janet’s possession is real or not.
Lorraine advises Ed not to get too involved, afraid that her vision of Ed’s death will come true. In Ed’s thesis, she has yet another glimpse of the demonic nun. Lorraine scribbles the name of the devil in her Bible.
While staying at the Hodgson house, Ed and Lorraine seek advice from other paranormal investigators, including Maurice Grosse and Anita Gregory, about the case’s validity.
They try to connect with Wilkins’ spirit in the hopes of persuading him to leave the family alone. One night, Gregory shows video footage of Janet intentionally destroying the kitchen as if it were a joke, effectively discrediting the haunting. Ed and Lorraine plan to leave because they believe the family is lying for fame.
They learn, however, that Wilkins’ spirit is only a pawn being used by the demonic nun to torment Janet and weaken her will. Lorraine discovers the nun has stifled her talents, preventing her from grasping the truth about Janet’s possession.
When Ed and Lorraine returned to the Hodgson home, they discovered Janet was possessed and the rest of the Hodgsons were locked outside. When Ed goes inside by himself, he discovers Janet at the window, about to commit suicide.
He grabs Janet just in time, but he’s on the verge of collapsing. The tree in the front yard is struck by lightning, transforming it into the entity that impales Ed in Lorraine’s vision.
Lorraine discovers her Bible, where she had written the name of the demon – Valak. She calls the demon by its name and successfully sends it to Hell. Lorraine pulls Janet and Ed to safety after she is released from its grip.
After returning home, Ed adds a haunted “Crooked Man” zoetrope toy owned by Peggy’s youngest child Billy to his and Lorraine’s set, putting it beside April’s music box and in front of the Annabelle doll.
