Hey there Potterhead, I know exactly why you are here. Being a Harry Potter fan, I used to wait for some owl to bring my Hogwarts letter and take me to the world full of magic, wizards, werewolves, witches and other magical things which my young self knew doesn’t exist but Harry Potter made me believe that miracles do happen so I still hope for some magic!

Many of you might have also read J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series and I know being a reader myself that oftentimes, the movie which is made with a book’s storyline don’t live up to the expectations of readers. But Harry Potter movies are a piece of art which stayed true to the source material, each and every artist did justice to the characters of the series but we know what is the saddest part, that it came to an end. It’s been more than 10 years since we last saw Harry and his friends roaming in their magical school doing spooky stuff. I know we all once in a while go down the memory lane and binge watch the Potter series but deep down we need to see more of the magical world which lives rent free in our imaginations. So, let’s take a look at more options which may in some way or another may remind us of Harry Potter’s crazy world.

Here’s a list of 15 movies like Harry Potter!

Fantastic Beasts (2016 and 2018 movies)

This movie is a fantastic start to our options list. ‘Fantastic Beasts’ is based on a book which would definitely be found in the great library of Hogwarts and may also find our infamous nerd Hermione with it. Trust me when I say this, you’re going to fall in love with the magical creatures. You will definitely hear some familiar names in the movie but will a whole new bunch of characters. But don’t you worry, in the second part of the movie Albus Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall will revisit you. This movie is a prequel series to Harry Potter. If by any chance you didn’t watch this movie, feel free to add these amazing movies to your watchlist.

I know this and you can’t even deny it if you love chocolates, you definitely imagined a world where everything is made up of chocolate. Yeah, I know you imagined it just now as well. Not every magical thing has to do something with witches and wizards, some fantasy worlds are just purely in the form of chocolate which is magic itself. Matilda (1996)

Now this one is a 1996 classic based on a very popular book under the same name. This movie is much similar with Harry Potter as like him Matilda also finds her escape in school from her dreadful misery of her house. Unlike Harry, Matilda doesn’t have a wand and she can’t even use a Locomotive charm, but she can make things move with her mind. With sweet Matilda and a bunch of evil professors you’re going to sit through the movie and will be given a treat of a happy ending.

This epic movie is the movie version of the first three books of C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series although there are a total seven books in the series. This movie is another magical movie where you’ll find a world of animals which can talk. The young children in the movie are living a horrible life of war much like Harry’s home. This movie is a journey of building trust, overpower the differences and more importantly the value of a family.

Inkheart (2008)

This one is definitely underrated. A movie jam packed with cries for help, drama and a hell lot of action which will make your adrenaline rush. The main character of the movie has a magical power. He can draw characters out of a book. But what happens when an evil character escapes in the real world? This question can only be answered once you watch this spectacular piece of art.

Percy Jackson movies (2010-2013)

This one is for the lovers of Greek mythology. But let me give advice on this one first, Percy Jackson is a novel series written by Rick Riordan. If you’ve already read the book then this movie will not be the one for you because many fans who read the novel first and then watched the movie criticized it. If you’re a person who has never read the novel series and is just looking for something similar to Harry Potter then this one is definitely a great pick.

The movie revolves around a young boy who is son of god, which he later finds out and tries to save the world from the evils with his powers along with his friends which give off the whole trio (Harry, Ron and Hermione) vibe.

[Ages-10+ | Amazon]

The Golden Compass (2007)

Yet another movie based on a novel. This movie is from Philip Pullman’s, His Dark Materials series. This story is about a young orphan girl who is on an adventure of finding Gobblers which are taking away her friends. A movie with a whole lot of magical creatures and a bit of magic. Potterhead are definitely going to like this one. Watch little Lyra defeat the great evils of the world.

The Lord of The Rings Trilogy (2001-2003)

This movie has all the sides of the Wizarding World. If you miss those fairytale-like stories of monsters, fairies and witches from childhood then this one is a great pick for you. A whole lot of magical creatures and places which make you relish your imaginations of having a world just like the one of Harry Potter. This is a story of a quest where you’ll find some amazing bonds of friendship, trust and the duties of a person towards the other. This movie has a strong message that, even if you are small in size, it doesn’t mean that you’re powerless.

[Ages-11+ | Amazon Prime]

A Monster Calls (2016)

The director of this movie has proved that a movie based on a novel can be as good as it’s source. The movie is of a young boy Conor who finds his magic but not in the forms of a wizard school but in the form of a tree. Yet, this book also has a hint of misery as the young boy’s mother is dying because of cancer and his father, well he’s not really there at home as he moved away to America to start his new family apart from this one. This movie can be heart-wrenching for you so do grab your tissues before watching this absolute epic film.

[Ages-12+ | Amazon, Netflix]

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)

Well not all great books can be portrayed in a movie. But if you’re just looking for a film like Harry Potter which takes you to an imaginary magical world where just like Harry found his, then one will do justice to your thoughts. A decent story with a whole lot of magic spooky stuff. This movie is about children with a lot of magical, supernatural powers who are living apart from the rest of the world.

[Ages-12+ | Amazon]

The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)

Yet another trio pushed into the world of magic and its great threats and let me tell you these three poor kids are quite not ready to face the demons of the magical world. One of my personally favorite picks for you as the three siblings definitely reminded me of our most cherished trio, Harry, Ron and Hermione. You will definitely get to see a lot of goblins which will entertain you till the very end.

The Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Well, it is quite obvious now that great movies come from novels. ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ is a movie based on a classic novel from 1977 by Katherine Patterson. This movie doesn’t have any actual magic but it is an imaginary world full of magical things created by the two children, who act as the rulers of the place they call Terabithia. Not going to give away much of the plot, just some advice to keep a box of tissues by your side because I know you will be blowing your noses while crying your eyes out till the end.

[Ages-9+ | Amazon]

Now You See Me (2013 and 2016)

This one doesn’t have any plot like Harry Potter or doesn’t even fall into the fantasy genre. This one is for those who love the power of illusion which is created by the magicians. These two movies of the same series will make you question your own eyes. Thrilling movie with a crime twist. Just for the lovers of raw and unreal magic.
