New Zealand is one of the few countries where with persistent efforts, they could completely eliminate COVID-19, a virus that has taken the world by storm. There have been days when new Zeland didn’t report a single case of COVID-19.
They wouldn’t want to get into that turmoil again for sure. And in order to ensure that there isn’t a second wave of the virus, they are taking every possible precaution. But sometimes, small mistakes can make people pay big. The same thing has happened in New Zealand.
Two UK women had arrived in Auckland on June 7. According to the policies of the country, a 14-day quarantine is mandatory for anyone coming from abroad. Accordingly, those women were kept in quarantine too in an Auckland hotel.
However, they were released early from the quarantine on compassionate ground. They were allowed to visit their dying relative in Wellington that was 650 km away.
They were related without getting tested. When they were driving in a private car to Wellington, one of the women felt unwell, and later, both were tested positive for COVID-19.
This incident has created a huge turmoil in New Zealand. The authorities are persistently asked why these women were released early without being tested. The prime minister has even marked the incident as an unforgivable mistake.
Although, authorities are continuously saying that these women didn’t meet anyone after being released. However, they met briefly two friends of them
This small mistake can make the whole of New Zealand pay. That’s why the authorities are in full working force in order to contact trace all the 320 people these women might have come into contact with and test them. These people include flight crews, hotel staff, other people in flight, and many more.
Top officials are engaged by this incident. Now they have taken a big decision to avoid such incidents in the future. They have given the guard of ensuring the quarantine to the military.
They have also scrapped the release on a compassionate ground policy. Although harsh, these are necessary decisions to prevent the spread of the virus again in this corona free country. For more such latest updates, stay tuned with us.
