Ukraine Investigates Recordings With Former President And Biden

Ukrainian prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the leaked recordings in which ex-President Petro Poroshenko is allegedly heard talking about the terms of a $ 1 billion loan with former United States Vice President Joe Biden, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported on Wednesday.

The recordings do not appear to contain anything that incriminates Biden or his son and was viewed by some analysts as a political attempt to aid United States President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign.

The Ukrainian investigation was opened on charges of treason and abuse of office, indicating that it is primarily directed against former President Poroshenko.

At the moment, there was no sign that the investigation could be directed against Biden. The attorney general’s office did not provide further details.

Last year, Trump pressured Zelenskiy to investigate the Biden during a phone call that sparked his impeachment process.

Zelenskiy, who cautiously avoided taking sides in the U.S. impeachment probe, said his predecessor may be in trouble over the tapes.

“They ruled the country in such a way that they could face many unanticipated twists and convictions,” said Zelenskiy, who has repeatedly accused Poroshenko of corruption, allegations that the former president has flatly contested.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Poroshenko said the recordings were forged and described their broadcast as part of a Kremlin-driven plan to “undermine bipartisan support in the United States for Ukraine.”

He said Biden was a “friend and ally of Ukraine” and criticized Zelenskiy for undermining Western support for Ukraine for the benefit of Moscow.

The United States and the European Union have responded with a series of sanctions against Russia.

Biden’s campaign declined to comment on Ukraine’s latest developments.
